Gary,
The attached photo shows the Honda 8.0 hp extra long shaft outboard on S/V Dynamic Equilibrium in the fully lowered position. Note, how far below the waterline the cavitation plate on the motor ends up. Transom mounted outboards on the standard parallelogram linkage motor mounts suffer from the problem of lifting the outboards water intake and prop too close to the surface of the water as the stern is lifted by waves or the hull heels to starboard. Sucking air into the engine’s cooling system &/or cavitating the prop are both very bad for the motor. The GB engine mount helps solve these issues in two ways. First, the GB engine mount positions the engine closer to the transom vs parallelogram linkage engine mounts. This locates the engine’s lower unit in deeper water on the stern wave. Second, the GB engine mount permits the vertical position of the engine to be infinitely adjusted several inches up and down. On port tack, the engine can be fully lowered to compensate for heeling, as illustrated in the photo. On starboard tack or in a following sea on a broad reach or run, the engine can be raised up as required to keep the power head out of the water. The GB engine mount combined with an extra long shaft outboard gives the greatest heavy weather motoring capability available with currently available outboards. Being able to motorsail in heavy weather is a huge tactical advantage.
I’ve been running my outboard in this configuration since 2009. I have experienced no issues with leaking or failed seals, bearings, &/or exhaust back pressure which might be expected from deeper than normal submersion.
As long as there is a mechanical stop on the bottom of the track, remove any spacers that are limiting the downward travel on the GB motor mount.

Thanks Jose - just what I needed to know! I will get in touch with General
Boats.
