Jesse,
I hesitated to write the post because I was a little afraid you might be offended by unsolicited “help”. I’m glad you’re OK with it.
North Sails puts out a lot of information on sail trim. If you get a chance over the winter, try to attend one of their seminars. They used to have a seminar called, “North U. TRIM”. I don’t know if this seminar is still offered; but, it was excellent! The companion textbook is:
Bill Gladstone, “North U. TRIM, The World’s Most Comprehensive Resource On Boatspeed and Boathandling”, 2007, North U., Madison, CT, ISBN: 0-9724361-1-1
The companion North U. TRIM seminar video disk is: ISBN: 978-0-9770952-6-1
If you would like a laminated guide (cheatsheet) on sail trim & rig tuning, try:
Bill Gladstone, “Captain’s Quick Guides: Sail Trim and Rig Tuning”, International Marine Div. of McGraw-Hill, www.internationalmarine.com<http://www.internationalmarine.com> , ISBN: 0-07-144013-5
My personal favorite from North Sails is, “The Shape of Speed”. My copy is old and it’s on VHS tape (Yes I’m that old!):
“The Shape of Speed, R329”, Produced For North Sails By Bennett Marine Video, Marina Del Ray, CA, (213) 821-3329,
ISBN: 97278-0329-3

Roger, thanks for the sail trim tips and the traveler instruction in
particular. My to do list for this fall includes adding tell tales to the
leech of the main which should help with sail trim.
