I am inclined to follow the manufacturer's instructions. My understanding is that silicone is specified with plastic as the other sealants can make the plastic brittle. I don't think that plastic is affected by butyl but you might want to confirm that with the manufacturer. One good thing about butyl is that if it leaks it is easy to remove and replace with silicone. Completely removing silicone, on the other hand, is almost impossible.

Thanks for that advice—I am also a butyl tape fan but the manufacturer instructions recommended silicon which is why I asked. Butyl tape it will be!
