Jeff,
The tiller extension and lockbox work in the most basic way, but it is awkward and mostly useful when proceeding on a more or less straight course.
Here is how I use the Tiller Clutch In a common single-handed scenario:
It’s time to tack—Ready about! Helm’s a lee!
Push the tiller to leeward, lock it in position with the click of a finger.
Shift to the opposite side, adjust jib sheets as we come about.
Unlock tiller with a click and straighten out on the new tack.
Once I’m settled into the new tack I can lock the tiller again for a few moments to tidy up lines and prepare for my next maneuver.
Once you try it, you’ll wonder how you’ve managed without it.
