Like last year, I rented a spot in a warehouse in the fall for a few months so I could work on the boat despite the weather. On Saturday, the boat will be back in the cold under a cover until spring. This year I installed a bow roller, a hatch, implemented some improvements for storage in a variety of areas, did a bit of woodwork and some other miscellaneous projects. I have found it very helpful to see the documentation from R22 sailors about their projects so I took some photos along the way and provided a write up in the attached document in hopes that others might find this useful. It's a bit long, but you can click on any of the items in the table of contents and it will take you to that section. I appreciate the effort you put into your videos and responses to questions on the list. A number of the projects were a direct result of watching your videos. The hatch was not a "measure twice, cut once" job. I measured, checked many times and took a deep breath before making the first cut. Are you saying that you?ve successfully run the wires from the lazarette to your electrical panel, or that you?re looking for help from the list to complete the job? That?s a very nice looking enclosure you?ve got for the panel and associated wiring. You should see at least one cable, which runs the stern running light. On my boat, this cable is secured to the hull/deck joint by small retaining clamps and nylon cable ties. You should be able to snip the cable ties with a pair of side cutters, run the new wire, and then secure the bundle to the same retaining clamps with new cable ties. If you are a big person, there isn?t much room under the cockpit seat, so you might want to find a small assistant. Good luck! This wire is stiff enough to push from the breaker panel under the companion way over to where the other wires exit into the gunnel area behind the starboard cockpit seats. Once you get there, you can fish the cables back to the breaker panel. It takes patience and a delicate touch. What email client are you using to post to the list? Some users have expressed issues when sending attachments from a Mac / Apple device though I know some members of the list have found workarounds for that. I'm PC / Android user so I can't speak to the details. Jesse Shumaker S/V Zephyr On Wed, Jan 13, 2021 at 7:49 AM Jeffrey Camiel wrote: > Re-doing a Rhodes 22 and under the cockpit seat I found this. From past posts to the list I know you were eagerly anticipating that for a while. Have you taken it out for a first sail yet? That's a nice setup for the wiring enclosure. Did the access panel in your photo come from the factory that way or did you fabricate and install that? I once tried pulling out the wiring panel on mine but everything was quite tight and it was hard to get access. Next fall, I would like to tackle a project like this with installing a terminal block and similar access panel. I just wasn't sure how much I would have to remove to accomplish this. For anyone that has been down this path, is it possible to remove just the top shelf of the galley without removing the base? On my boat, there are three vertical supports under the shelf that are attached to the counter top with screws and ?L? brackets. You?ll also have to remove the lower track for the sliding doors. There are probably a few other screws that I?ve forgotten about. So, apart from dealing with the wiring, it?s a very straightforward job. Naturally, one of my YouTube videos discusses rewiring this area. The link is below. The wiring section starts at about 6:30. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsJeFTQnR6Q&list=PLD6vr6Mq0Bwdv6rPOLAsABr3SYIK6vTBO&index=23 Peter Nyberg Coventry, CT s/v Silverheels (1988/2016) > On Jan 13, 2021, at 9:12 AM, Jesse Shumaker wrote: > > Rueben, congrats on getting your Rhodes 22! Today's questions are about the motor lift. First, how do I go about getting a spare remote fob...I have this fear of one day watching the remote fob decide to go for a swim. Of course this will happen with the motor raised, the wind calm and me miles from home. Second, is there an easy way to hard wire a up/down switch to use in case the remote fails or disappears Third, I understand that there is a clutch on the motor, enabled by a knob on one end of the motor...has anyone tried that...does it actually work so that the outboard can be lowered? The motor lift winch that came on my boat was only operated by a single remote and it was starting to exhibit inconsistency (occasionally slow to start/stop). Others had posted about adding a hard wired switch and/or replacing the remote, but I found it easiest to replace the entire winch with one that had a wired switch and two remotes. I keep one remote stowed in the port side cockpit coaming compartment, attached via velcro to a spot just above the opening and attached with a retractable cable so it can't fall overboard. The other remote is stowed in a ziploc bag in the sliding doors on top of the galley. The hard wired switch is now mounted to an HDPE block in the opening between the lazarette and the underside of the port side cockpit bench (where the fuel line comes through) just above the board I used to mount my spare anchor in the front side of the lazarette. I normally use the wired switch. This fall I made some changes to the wired switch mounting and how the wires are organized/protected in the lazarette but you can see the rest of my motor lift project from fall 2019 documented at: http://rhodes-22.1065344.n5.nabble.com/Replacement-of-winch-for-motor-lift-td56157.html#none Others on this group have various versions of the manual lift from GB which seems to get good reviews, or have improvised their own. I like my current setup, but next fall I plan to add a backup manual hoist which could be easily put in place in case the electric lift was not working. Regarding your other question, pulling on the knob on the motor does allow it to spin freely and that appears to be a normal feature of most of these types of winches. Good luck! Beckson, one of the largest manufacturer specifies that silicone SHOULD be used : Their installation instructions are found here: https://www.beckson.com/installport.html "Choice of Sealant: There are many brands of caulk, adhesive and sealant available in your marine chandlery or hardware store, but be wary, not all are like. Many are for specific applications and may contain solvents that are destructive to thermoplastics. Chemical solvents should not be used for clean up. Beckson recommends 100% silicone sealant only. Availability of silicone varies regionally. Please contact your sealant manufacturer for the most up to date information with regard to materials and compatibility. Silicone has been around for nearly 50 years without sign of failure. Most other caulks and sealants fail after 10 years. When a port is installed properly, silicone works best for years of enjoyment. Sanding previously caulked areas: Previously caulked or sealed areas must be sanded in order to remove the old caulk. If not removed, a strong bond will not occur. Surfaces may appear to be free of caulk to the eye, but residue may still be present on the gel coat. Sand lightly with 220 grit paper to prepare for the silicone sealant." Check with the port manufacturer before deciding. Butyl is probably a safe choice but while it is an excellent sealant it is very weak as an adhesive. On a slightly curves surface that adhesive quality might be important. The portlites used are Beckson Fixed Port PF410-BS-20 (4" x 10" x 2") I had to replace one (Don't use acetone to clean polycarbonate!) and found it at Defender. Here are my notes from my Projects Report: 5. Port Lite Re-Bedding Port lites are a common source for cabin leaks which lead to interior damage and headaches. There are almost as many instructions on replacing/rebedding a port lite as there are occurrences! (?Practical Sailor Magazine? has some great instructions online) I won?t go into the specific details of this operation, but a couple of things I learned. My lites had been rebedded with silicone sealer at some point. Again, there are pros and cons. One of the cons I can attest to is the removal of silicone residue. It?s a bitch! But I have found that Marine Formula by De-Bond Corporation will turn the residue of just about any sealant/adhesive, including polysulfides (5200), into a mush that can be easily removed with a putty knife, chisel or razor window scraper. Nonetheless, silicone sealant seems to be the best route due to its adhesiveness, flexibility and waterproof properties. So that?s what I used Another thing I found out is that Acetone will ruin acrylic port lites! Don?t use it! ----- Joe Dempsey s/v Respite Rhodes 22 1989/2005 Deltaville,VA -- Sent from: http://rhodes-22.1065344.n5.nabble.com/ From mark at whipplefamily.com Sat Jan 16 15:16:56 2021 From: mark at whipplefamily.com (Mark Whipple) Date: Sat, 16 Jan 2021 15:16:56 -0500 Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Want to trade your R22 for mine? Message-ID: Big Boat Sold? Now what? So it looks like I have a buyer for my 30' Nimble yawl. Still a long way to go until I'll consider it a done deal but I do have a deposit in hand. I'm a pretty linear thinker so I find it much easier to focus on B once A is under control. In other words I am now giving more thought to what projects I want to tackle on my Rhodes. More on that below. As I considered what I would do to make this boat "mine," it occurred to me that the parts I'm planning to remove might be just what someone else is looking for. No, I'm not looking to sell those parts at this point. I'm wondering if there's someone else who has a similar vintage Rhodes (mine is from 2000, with no known GB rebuilds) in similar condition who might want to swap for a boat with a self-tending jib, a wheel helm and a saildrive. The Project I'm Considering The two big ones are the self-tending jib and the engine. After sailing the boat several times over the last two seasons I decided I want to remove the self-tending jib and Hoyt jib boom. The engine is a Saildrive built by a Swedish company that's no longer in business. It's based on a Yamaha/Parsun 15hp outboard so many of the parts for the head (at least) are available. It's running fine just now but I'm more concerned about the long term, in particular the bellows or seal that keeps the water out. It's possible that a part for a Yanmar or Volvo saildrive might fit but I haven't got that far. I'm not sure just yet if I'll remove the wheel or not. I haven't yet been able to get Stan to tell me what I would need to convert my rudder head back to tiller usage, so I may keep the wheel for now. I think I really prefer a tiller, even though the wheel was not as bad as I thought it might be. Details I can provide pictures and more details on my boat. I'm just floating the idea to see if there's any interest. I bought the boat in the summer of 2019 and overpaid based on current prices. Oh well. I'm less worried about a dollar-for-dollar swap than I am avoiding the projects I'd have to tackle to get the boat the way I want it. I'm not looking for a project boat, I want to be able to splash whatever I have in the spring with minimal effort. I don't know the make of my trailer but I'd deem it serviceable. It is single axle but it does have surge brakes. I've noted some areas of rust that I planned to tackle after launching the boat. Let me know your thoughts. The boat apparently had the mast come down in a hurricane and sunk at the dock. The current owner who is not a sailor took the boat and refurbished it. For some reason he seemed to have stopped after about 80%. There are a lot of nice improvements. The deck is covered with what looks like wood but is a soft foam rubber marine material that is glued on. Nice hull paint job. One of the issues was that the flooring in the salon covers the centerboard trunk and would need to have a hatch cut out in order to access it. The biggest issue when I looked at it was the trailer which was unuseable in my opinion. Some of the bunk supports were completely rusted through as in no longer there. I believe the centerboard was resting on metal. Might be a good deal for some of the members of this group that could finish the project. I wouldn't trust moving it anywhere on the trailer so not quite sure how it could be moved to another one. Hope that helps. Several years ago, my 1976 Rhodes 22 developed centerboard symptoms similar to your description. The centerboard pennant and block were pretty worn and I replaced them. I believe I used a Harken Microblock and 5/16? OD solid braid Dacron line. However, the biggest issue was that the centerboard pivot was worn and sloppy. I solved this by fiberglassing a C fiber tube into the centerboard. This C fiber tube serves as a naturally lubricative bushing for the centerboard pivot bolt to ride in and it?s much longer wearing vs the original fiberglass. The chances are you are going to have to replace the pivot bolt as well. When the centerboard has a lot of side-to-side play, the centerboard pennant can slip down between the centerboard and the well. This greatly increases the required effort to raise the board and causes rapid wear on the pennant and block. After many years of trying different antifouling paints, I settled on Pettit Hydrocoat Ablative (https://www.pettitpaint.com/products/antifouling-bottom-paint/hydrocoat/hydrocoat/) for the waters of Long Island, NY. My boat is launched in May and hauled in October so my paint is exposed for a 6 month season with water temperatures of 50 to 80 F. Marine growth is rapid and fairly intense during the summer months. My goal was to find an ablative that was relatively safe for me to apply (water based), curbed marine growth and did not destroy the environment. Hydrocoat provided a good compromise and lasts for several seasons. For the first time in my life, I paint every other year, two coats. Dry time is not a factor with this product so I can paint on the first warm day in spring and launch a month or more later. It contains PTFE to reduce hull speed impact and is "self-polishing". It comes in four colors which permits me to select a contrasting color each time to easily identify the areas that need to be repainted. I have not tried the SR version - I superstitiously stick with what works in my waters. The cost is reasonable ($165/gal) from Defender.com (https://www.defender.com/search.html?q=Pettit) Mike s/v Wind Lass ('91) Nissequogue River, NY I?d rather be sailing :~) -----Original Message----- From: Rhodes22-list On Behalf Of Eric Smith via Rhodes22-list Sent: Friday, January 29, 2021 12:45 PM To: rhodes22-list at rhodes22.org Subject: [Rhodes22-list] New bottom paint suggestions Hi! Don't forget to secure the bitter end of the anchor line before deploying. 2. How does one adjust the length of the deployed anchor rode? Is it fixed? 3. In the video, it appears that the anchor rode is run over the bow pulpit so that it lifts the anchor. I would assume that a properly positioned block might be a better solution. 4. I might run the anchor rode through the bow chocks and use a second line threaded through a block to release the anchor. My danforth holds really well in the lake bottom so I?m planning on maybe a 20-25? rode plus chain and the length will be fixed. I will have the rode attached to my bow eye and the rode and chain stowed somehow on the bow, possibly in some container hanging from the side of the bow pulpit?
