Mike,
I think the centerboard has a metal skeleton inside of it. My centerboard was molded in 2 halves, which were glued to the metal skeleton. In addition, I think there is some lead shot for ballast that is glued inside. The impact that produced the gaping hole on your centerboard may have dislodged some of this lead shot.
