[Rhodes22-list] Forward windows on R22

Hi Tom,

My Rhodes 22 is also a 1978 and it has the slanted opening ports on the front of the cabin doghouse. It sounds like your boat is missing a pair of critical pieces of canvas meant to prevent the accumulation of rainwater in the ports. Take a look at the attached photo of my boat:

Note the little tube of blue rolled up canvas over the port side front port. That is the canvas port cover (it’s actually made of Sunbrella acrylic fabric), in this picture rolled up and secured with a built-in strap and snap so the port can be opened for ventilation and light. Underway or in foul weather, the canvas port cover is unrolled to cover the entire port. The port cover also has provision for creating an arch in the bottom with a couple of extra snaps. These enable the port cover to form an “air scoop” to help ventilate the cabin even when its raining. Finally, the canvas port cover protects the port from UV sun degradation.

My boat came with these canvas port covers. Over the years, sun exposure killed them and I’ve had to replace them. But, these little pieces of canvas are a lot cheaper/easier to replace vs the entire port or installing new ports on the top of the cabin doghouse. Any competent canvas shop should be able to build you a set of these canvas port covers.

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Forward windows on R22

My 1978 Rhodes has the old-style forward windows that collect rainwater and
collect two puddles of water in the slanted wells. I know that some of the
reconditioned boats have non-opening windows that drain off the water that
falls on the cabin top. Does anyone know the model and source of these
windows? I'm thinking of adding a hatch for ventilation and swapping out
these windows for something that doesn't collect water.

Thanks for your help.
