> Our Rhodes is an 86 model. A neighbor and I bought it about 3 years ago knowing it was somewhat of a project, needing extensive tlc. It turned into a complete interior rebuild with dry rot and termites into the stringers. The cockpit deck required new core and nonskid gel repair. We just about had her ready to sail when Ian floated her off the trailer breaking the centerboard and dinging the hull in several spots. That is when we encountered Mike Orla. We decided that after glass repair on the hull, we would not be able to match the red gelcoat. The solution was a new paint job. All of that and more took quite a while. Once we were able to get on the water, we found the motor was not dependable and repowered her. We are just now able to sail comfortably even though we still have some minor gelcoat repairs to finish and rewire the breaker panel. The galley rebuild and sole repairs are complete. That's a very brief rundown of our journey.

If you insist on jacking the hull up, please distribute the weight over a large area using soft wood blocks. Instead, I use an A-frame made of a pair of through bolted 4x4x12s and a come-along to the from lifting hook. Make sure that the block behind the front hook is in good condition and that the nuts to the U-bolt are tight.

Unless you are painting on concrete, I always put plywood under the legs to prevent the stands from sinking into the soil or blacktop. The boat stands should also come equipped with chains. You should use these to secure the top of the boat stands together. As you are lifting and lowering the boat, you may find several pieces of 4x6 wood are useful to use as cribbing to support a corner while you reposition the jack.
