I'm trying to get back on the email-list, as I went to log-in today and nothing worked.? I'm selling my Rhodes, which was Stan's demo-boat that many of you sailed, before you purchased your own. I've wanted to sell it for a couple of years and posted about that in 2023 or 2024, but my wife wanted to hang on to it. I won't detail those marital-conversations where she thought I was asking too little or not giving it a chance, or whatever. It's 1989' model that was up-cycled in 2015. I bought new sails in 2019, which got delayed by COVID, and then changed over the correct sail-luft to fit the mast in 2025? They have zero-hours on them. I've got an itemized invoice from last year that corrected a whole lot of problems with the boat's wiring. The solar-panels and batteries were replaced. The electrical system "fixed." (It was the demo/prototype boat, so I'm not faulting Stan, but the electrical system was... messy.) The shore-power-wiring is capped-and-stowed, but otherwise everything should be good-to-go. All of the work was done at Navy Point Marina in Sacket's Harbor, NY. The trailer is a dual-axle that I bought from Triad in 2019. It's got about a thousand miles on it (none of it in water). The tires and hubs were in good condition when I towed up it up Navy Point last Spring, but it needs an inspection and registration renewal (which I'll cover and fix). It has a Lehr, 5HP propane-outboard that I've had in my garage and fire up every year. It has maybe 20 hours on it, but could use an oil change (as it's mostly been sitting for 10 years) and the hoses replaced. I'm having the boat cleaned and detailed (the cushions and cockpit-cushions have been in my garage) and then bringing it back to Syracuse, NY once that's done. The interior-upholstery might as well be new; the foam, still really good, but not "new." I don't want to post pictures until it's been cleaned, because the Winter-storage yards I used in the past (not Navy Point) didn't really fulfill their end of the bargain. However, this is the boat next to my truck after my wife and I went through and cleaned it up the last time (Summer of 2024). I'm going to list it for $12.5k, but I want to offer it up to the Rhodes-group (which has been so good to me over the years) the first crack at it, to keep it in the family. Tge dams were nearly 100 years old. The flood bankrupted Boyce Hydro. The 4 dams are now owned by Midland and Gladwin counties. But, they are managed on behalf of the county governments by the 4 Lakes Association, a group of lakefront property owners. The 4 Lakes Association convinced the county governments to form the 4 Lakes Special Water District, which gave them the power to levy annual water district assessments to pay for the cleanup, rebuilding, and operations of the 4 dams. This assessment shows up on my property tax bill every year. Long story short, the dams were rebuilt and operated by private money. The 4 Lakes Association is like a super powerful neighborhood homeowner?s association. Lots of oversight and snooping. I can?t launch my boat from my property. But, my subdivision has a launch ramp about 1/4 mile from my house. No mooring out is allowed. Of the ~k$90 damages, ~k$45 has already been spent back in 1990 to remove flood debris and stabilize the shoreline. We were counting on the class action lawsuit settlement to pay for most of the remaining repairs (replacement) to our dock, sea walls, and steps. We?re retired and living on a fixed income. With no settlement, we?re going to have to drastically scale back our plans, if we do anything at all. Another option is to sell the boat. This is the sort of thing that really shakes one?s faith in the judicial system. Sorry to be such Debbie Downer; but, I needed to vent! Roger Pihlaja S/V Dynamic Equilibrium 1978. My heart aches for Roger and I hope he finds relief and justice in the appeal. I keep my boat on a mooring with no dingy dock and find it harder every year to manage a tender. I use a 12? inflatable Stand Up Paddle board that is light enough to throw on my roof racks but gets heavier every year. My semi-courageous wife puts on her life vest and climbs on the back, we pile our gear and picnic in front and I paddle 75 yards to the mooring. At low tide it?s easier to walk. Coming home in the dark with a breeze on can be an exciting challenge. (A royal PITA) according to my semi-courageous wife. The Rhodes 22 is a hands -on , DIY kind of boat. Most of us have made repairs and added extras we never dreamed we even knew how to do. In the past we had Stan to call, ask and get cryptic answers that made us think harder. And sometimes he even had parts to sell, shipped with the promise we would send a check someday. Three cheers for his 100 years. In my fantasies, I add foils to Dadventure and sail it around the Med like Chris and his fully courageous wife, only 3x faster. In reality, my back is failing and it?s harder to make even simple repairs much less major improvements like the fancy cabin sole I always wanted. I?m looking forward to this season and I might even get the time to rebuild and install the IMF mast I collected all the parts for. So Rhodes. Good luck with all you spring upgrades, cleanups and launches. Enjoy at least one more season with our treasured R22s. But, what I'm not seeing is the cleat you use to secure the outhaul. In heavy air, the mainsail's foot needs at least a 2:1 mechanical advantage to obtain the proper sail shape with the standard rig. With the innermast furling mechanism adding friction, I wouldn't be surprised if 3:1 or even 4:1 were required. Without seeing the cleat, I would think the outhaul would start at the hole in the fitting on the end of the boom, run to the block on the clew, back to the small block on the boom, and then to the cleat. Try that and let me know how it works for you. Hope you are sailing soon if not already. Last fall when I was attempting to lower my mast with the winch will only pay out a few inches of line before the handle started to unscrew. I managed to get it down by tightening the nut on the handle side of the winch but the same thing seems to be happening now. It seems like it catches just fine to raise the mask so I should be fine this spring, but is there something that needs adjusting or replacing from your experience? The nut on the handle Sides has a spring and the shaft of that bolt/nut combo sticks out about an inch and a half or so. is that normal? I believe this is the original mask raising system from General boats. The winch housing says Shelly on it. Thanks for whatever help you can give, Matt Wilson Hornblower II White Bear Lake, Minnesota
