[Rhodes22-list] Hunting at anchor

Mark,

It's always advantageous to run the anchor rode down thru the bow eye to
center it on the bow & get it as low to the water as possible in order to
improve the scope ratio. That extra 18" of elevation between the bow eye &
the deck cleat counts as "water depth" as far as the effect upon the anchor
scope is concerned. Whether you clip the rode onto the bow eye with a
carabiner or snap shackle, use a short length of rope or simply run the rode
thru the bow eye doesn't matter. In my experience, the effect of doing this
upon sailing around the anchor is minimal. Sailing around the anchor is
simply a side effect of modern designs. It is harmless & you will get used
to it in time. But, if you really can't tolerate it, then use a stern
anchor. Nothing else will stop the boat from sailing around its anchor.
But, be advised that if you anchor in amongst a bunch of other similar
boats, then you had better be prepared to do whatever they are doing. i.e.,
if they are using a stern anchor, then you should as well or anchor
sufficiently far away that your anchor swing radius does not overlap your
neighbor's.
