Not Denis Leary either.

It was originally entitled "I Am a Bad Republican" and bounced around the
right-wing portion of the web, attributed to different commentators going
from the best known ("Rush"--he didn't write it either) back to the obscure.
A lot of people altered it but neglected to mention they had cribbed most of
it from other people's email.  Now a guy posting to www.FreeRepublic.com
says he wrote it.  Who knows.

But we can be pretty sure George Carlin didn't write it.  Carlin was
pissed-off that it had been changed from Bad "Republican" to Bad "American"
and attributed to him.  He used to have a whole page on his website
(www.georgecarlin.com) devoted to a rant on the topic.  He was angry because
it wasn't funny--that's probably why most people who circulate it preface
their remarks with "I can't believe George Carlin wrote this..."  The truth
is, it doesn't sound like George Carlin at all, and we know it.

It's too easy to slander people on the web anonymously.  The web has become
the 21st century version of "if it's printed it must be true."  It's also
easy to check things out on the web, and it behooves all of us to do so
every time we doubt the veracity of what we are reading.
