	Hi Joe,
	I have an HP 315, Christmas gift a few years ago.  It works, 2.1 MP,
20 pictures with 8MB memory, is pretty basic.  One thing that is hard for me
is the waiting period after pushing the button before it "decides" to
actually take the picture.  Some cameras are better than others in this
respect.  Also make sure your pc can download the images (USB port and lots
of disk space) as well as having a decent printer.  I have kept most of my
images on the hard drive, a color printer is pretty awkward to use at work.
A good printer is on my Christmas list...

Back to the basics.  What is good, what is better?  I don't know what
questions to ask.  Auto and manual, pixels, features???

I like the water tight case.  Do they make a camera with a water tight case?

I have and am very happy with the Nikon Coolpix 885.  Available from
reputable Onine stores for just under 400.  Comp USA/Wiz type pricing at
about 500.00.

Camera has really good auto modes, and also excellent manual control.

Only caveat is that like most Digital things, it doesn't like humidity
and especially salt water.  A case, preferably water tight is adivised
if it will spend much time on the boat.  I would keep it cased and
stowed when not actually in use.

We have a Fuji FinePix 1400 -

most of the time. It's about 2 yrs. old, which is forever for
electronics
these days - it cost about $350 at the time we bought it. I looked
around a
bit and found a few still for sale in the $200 range, so for $400 or so
you
should be able to pick up something with a lot more features. Feel free
