[Rhodes22-list] Rhodies in Canton GA and Atlanta!!

I've been lurking the past few weeks..I am a partial-Rhodie I guess...I have
a Rhodes Bantam 14 (hull number 1166) with a wood mast, no less. Allatoona
is a great power boat/skidoo lake, but you dont see that many sailboats
there. Lanier, although farther away, has great wind, huge shoreline, and
areas/marinas that are predominantly sailboat oriented..check out Aqualand,
Sunrise Cove and Holiday Marinas (with Aqualand as hands down majority
sailboats). Also, there is an active group that sails out of Lake Lanier
marinas called Barefoot Sailing Club that hosts small sailing regattas,
cookouts, etc. Dont know much about Hartwell--it is much more of a drive
from Canton. I've seakayaked there and the power boaters seem pretty
respectful, which was not the case when I tried to sail on Allatoona. Also,
if you are into trailering your boat to the Georgia coast, there is a
fantastic sailing area called St. Simons Island (Golden Isles Marina--owned
by Barney Riley). It's about 3 1/2 hours from Atlanta--well worth the drive

we have Yankees and mid-westerners to civilize it!! PS--I am a native
Atlantan, but I do NOT chew tobacco, do NOT go to dirt track stock car races
am NOT married to my older brother, do NOT have my washing machine on my
front porch, do NOT eat possums or other road kill, do NOT live in a trailer
and truly do NOT(for real) believe in the Rebel flag and what it symbolizes
to some of the inbreds that live at the bottom of our food chain. I DO
however say "Y'all" a lot, even after living in Manhattan for a year.

Brad,
My motorized dinghy was just an afterthought. I had a $99 trolling motor in
the basement, and a small -- the smallest size in WM -- 12 volt battery in
the sunporch. Putting them together I was surprised they did so well. My
boat is 1/2 mile from where I launch my dinghy. I steer the dinghy by
leaning -- it will go in the direction opposite the lean -- for amusement.
The amount of electricity used is insignificant. The trip takes maybe 5
minutes. At first I was recharging the battery after every use. Then I
realized that was completely unnecessary. I don't use it that often, because
I prefer to row. I charge the battery at the beginning of the season and
leave it at that. If the battery seems to be running low I will probably
recharge from the batteries on board -- with 2 batteries on a Rhodes you
have much more electricity than you need.

Bill,
Walker Bay just came out with a RIB/hard dinghy combo
(its on their website) that looks attractive. The
main attraction is the additional stability. Like all
things nautical, dinghy choice involves compromise.
The dinks that sail well (Optimist, Mirror) don't make
the best tenders and I doubt the Fatty Knees/Walker
Bay/prams that row/motor well sail all that easily.
Question: what size trolling motor/battery combo do
you have and how many hours of service do you get
between charges?

I didn't read the whole thing but I say if an airline(s) is going under let
them. If laws were broken charge those responsible. If they didn't break any
laws then I am not sure about the "street thug" comment. If stock holders
support the outrageous pay of upper management then they only have
themselves to blame.
I don't know what the answer is but the government needs to get out of the
"bail out" business. Also CEO Level pay is way to high with no end in sight.

Wally,
Actually, if one of the big airlines DID go under it
would solve a lot of problems for the ones that are
left. I have friends at all of them so its not
something I want to see happen but it probably needs
to happen. The 9/11 bailout loans/payments were a
"feel good" solution that may have been necessary at
the time to keep the country going psycologically but
is not a long term solution. Some of the companies
that held their hand out were plain disgusting (I
won't mention names). SouthWest is the only
consistantly profitable airline but not for the
reasons most people think. SWA is heaviliy unionized
and pays very well. They differ in that their
business model is more efficient and their employees
and equipment are used more productively. The cheap
labor costs that the 1978 De-regulation bill was
supposed to bring has not spawned a single surviving
airline that hasn't gone through bankruptcy (if you're
thinking of Jet Blue, its too soon to make a
judgement, they haven't started making payments on
their French jets yet). The new reality of the
marketplace is that SouthWest style service may seem
like First Class compared to being shoe-horned into a
regional jet. The good times were fun while they
lasted. Long live freight!

We postponed our annual trip to China for obvious
reasons. I fed Fan daily with more bad news but her
parents in China followed the party line (read the
newspapers) until it was too overwhelming to ignore.
Then the truth came out. Now, Beijing has a 911 type
phone number, 120, that you can call if you have SARS
symptoms and need transportation to a treatment
center. During Fan's last weekly phone conversation
with her sister and parents the following story was
told. My sister-in-law has a three year old daughter
who is about the sharpest kid I ever met (smarter than
my own). She ran a slight fever a few days ago and her
parents and grand-parents were quite alarmed. This is
how the conversation went (paraphrased from Mandarin
to English).
Ran Ran, do you feel bad?
No, I feel fine.
But you have a temperature, does your head hurt?
No, I feel fine.
Does your stomach hurt?
No, Mom, I feel fine!
You don't hurt anywhere?
No, I feel fine! Whatever you do, don't call 120!
We think we'll stay here until the dust settles on
this issue.

Brad: we have friends whose grandchildren WERE in China & they were very
anxious until the little grandbabies arrived safe & sound----and SARS-less,
in the US (the concern was primarily that if they did somehow contract

We got to fly the UPS this weekend. Winds were light and variable at the
time. The sail really made a difference in the light air (though it didn't
do a thing for the variable part ;-) ) I was surprised at how easy it was
to manage - it's a big sail but the air was so light I didn't bother with
the winches. The furler base does bump a bit on our solar vent but that
doesn't seem to affect anything. We used the genoa cars and tried it on
most points of sail - sometimes within seconds of each other without moving
the tiller. We rigged it before we went out and just laid it fully furled
across the cabin top - the air was so light we didn't need to worry about
it going anywhere.. It didn't interfere with the genoa. We don't have our
halyard run aft so I had to go to the cabintop to raise the sail (short
arms) but that was easy as well.
Also got to try out the new outhaul system for the main. What an
improvement!

Roger,
Will you move your family right away if you take this position? Lake
Allatoona and Lake Lanier are close to Atlanta, but we have people from
that area that keep their boats on Lake Hartwell.

Brad,
Correction, people from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan are considered
mid-westerners, not Yankee's. There is a huge difference.

We got to fly the UPS this weekend. Winds were light and variable at the
time. The sail really made a difference in the light air (though it
didn't
do a thing for the variable part ;-) ) I was surprised at how easy it
was
to manage - it's a big sail but the air was so light I didn't bother
with
the winches. The furler base does bump a bit on our solar vent but that
doesn't seem to affect anything. We used the genoa cars and tried it on
most points of sail - sometimes within seconds of each other without
moving
the tiller. We rigged it before we went out and just laid it fully
furled
across the cabin top - the air was so light we didn't need to worry
about
it going anywhere.. It didn't interfere with the genoa. We don't have
our
halyard run aft so I had to go to the cabintop to raise the sail (short
arms) but that was easy as well.
Also got to try out the new outhaul system for the main. What an
improvement!

We postponed our annual trip to China for obvious
reasons. I fed Fan daily with more bad news but her
parents in China followed the party line (read the
newspapers) until it was too overwhelming to ignore.
Then the truth came out. Now, Beijing has a 911 type
phone number, 120, that you can call if you have SARS
symptoms and need transportation to a treatment
center. During Fan's last weekly phone conversation
with her sister and parents the following story was
told. My sister-in-law has a three year old daughter
who is about the sharpest kid I ever met (smarter than
my own). She ran a slight fever a few days ago and her
parents and grand-parents were quite alarmed. This is
how the conversation went (paraphrased from Mandarin
to English).
Ran Ran, do you feel bad?
No, I feel fine.
But you have a temperature, does your head hurt?
No, I feel fine.
Does your stomach hurt?
No, Mom, I feel fine!
You don't hurt anywhere?
No, I feel fine! Whatever you do, don't call 120!
We think we'll stay here until the dust settles on
this issue.

hi all
glad to see we re making progress on the u p s..im anxiously awaiting more
input from experienced rhodies
my boat was new last year and i never used the head...when i went to
commission it this year i opened the seacock and started pumping.with the
bowl fill lever in the fill position....nothing happened..no water
intake....before i took the pump apart i thought id better ask if there is
any other test i should do.... like prime it ?? all input will be greatly
appreciated
