Actually, no.  They have come quite far down in price, and work remarkably well.  They use the same technology used in stabilized video cameras.  Many are made by Japanese electronics firms like Canon.  Fuji also makes them, using a different technology.

You can get and hand hold 12X.  

The only question is when to get them.  The price keeps going down.  My next binoculars will be image stabilized.

Stabilized binocs? -- they must cost almost as much as the R22, especially
brands like Steiner.

the real problem is using binoculars on a 22 foot boat, they do move around
allot :-), one of these days I have to get the
stabilized pair. BTW I forgot an item on the list, a hand held "hokey puck"
compass, great for barring and nice as a backup compass.
