Bill,
Last week I was talking a fellow who, with his wife on a 48' steel cutter,
spent the last nine years circumnavigating. He said one of the best tools he
had aboard was a night vision scope. He used it to find marks at night, to
impress/befriend people in less developed countries, to ensure their
security by being able to see a panga full of men standing off them in the
night, and he highly recommended it for nighttime navigation.
I asked him about stabilizing binoculars and he said they're cool, but he
didn't think they were worth the money. He said he might get a pair when
they come down to about half what they cost now, but that he had plenty of
other "more important to the boat" things to spend the money on.

Actually, no. They have come quite far down in price, and work remarkably
well. They use the same technology used in stabilized video cameras. Many
are made by Japanese electronics firms like Canon. Fuji also makes them,
using a different technology.
You can get and hand hold 12X.
The only question is when to get them. The price keeps going down. My next
binoculars will be image stabilized.

Stabilized binocs? -- they must cost almost as much as the R22, especially
brands like Steiner.
Fair winds!

the real problem is using binoculars on a 22 foot boat, they do move around
allot :-), one of these days I have to get the
stabilized pair. BTW I forgot an item on the list, a hand held "hokey puck"
compass, great for barring and nice as a backup compass.
