Raz,
Your discovery of the 2hp motor may have solved your problems. I
used to sail from the dock and sail to the dock, but I took a great deal of
heat for what I was doing. I said I had a sail boat, they said how do you
know that your motor works.
If all I ever was going to do was sail on my home lake, then any
small motor would do. But if you sail on he coast, you have to deal with
currents. Even with a wind you can go backwards. So I have an 8hp motor,
which I deem adequate to handle currents.
In using an older motor, a lot depends on who tunes and adjusts it.
Some mechanics have an ability to take a motor that is a problem and correct
the problem. Your choice in who you choose to tune your old motor is
probably the issue, not that you have an old motor. Maybe spend some time
looking for that great mechanic is the real way to go. $200 is a lot less
than $2,000.
Old four strokes seem to me to become problems, unless the owner
himself knows how to make adjustments. Whereas, most of us can eventually
get an old 2 stroke going. Is your current motor 2 or 4. From my personal
experience, I stand with Rummy that the 4 strokes are more difficult to deal
with.
Keep in mind that there are quite a few on this list concerned with
environmental issues. Old outboard engines are known polluters.

Thanks for all the input including back channel. I like the Honda 8
that I have but for the starting challenges, which I may just have
(another) tune job and see how it works next year. I appreciate
especially the advice about the XL shaft; but for such, I would have
probably lined up the L.
By the way, I tried out the new Honda AIR cooled, 4 cycle, 2 (as in
"two") HP on the Rhodes. (I bought it for a dink I am getting). In no
wind, wave, or current, it does a right smart job and is light on the
lift and crank, and the air cooled feature is nice because it reduces
the things you have to worry about by one. I think it is a little
louder than the water-cooled version, but not objectionably so. If I
was sure that all I ever needed was motoring the last 100 feet, I think
it would be a workable solution. But into the wind, let alone over the
waves, I am not sure it could make headway, or much headway, and when
you need the motor, generally speaking, you really need it.
