Slim,
Another fix might be to separate the rudder head halves and make new
wooden blocks that separate those halves. You might even try to run
those blocks through a table saw and take 3/16' or so off of one
side...if it won't cause the tiller handle to be pinched.

Todd,
Thanks for the links. I think the "slick strips" looke too thin for
my
purpose, although they look easy to use and
maybe I could double them up. I haven't measured how much slop I have
but
I'm guessing it's at least 1/4". The
Teflon PTFE seems like the way to go since it comes in a variety of
thicknesses and I can measure my slop and order
what I need. UHMW shims might work too but it might be hard to get
them to
stay put. I won't know until I get to
play with it in the spring.
Thanks again,
Slim

Slim,
How much slop do you have in your rudder? Would teflon or uhmwpe
washers
(shims) work? Would UHMW polyethylene or teflon film or sheet stock
work better?
See http://www.mcmaster.com/ type 3388 in the search window for page
3388. 3387 has thicker sheets. UHMW PE is around page 3383
I plan to re-line my pop top slider tracks with something similar to
