As I recall, you do have to pull the IMF furling tube out of the mast far
enough for the "spool" (the space between the two bearings,that the line
wraps up on) to clear the bottom of the mast.While you have it out that far,
check the top and bottom bearings to make sure they aren't cracked where the
screws thread in,on the top and bottom of both bearings.
And while you've gone this far, remember that screw that holds the thrust
bearing on the bottom of the furling tube. You know,the one that caught you
dropping the soap in the shower,last year. You might think about putting a
longer one in it's place.
