Claude, your post reminded me of something that I wanted to ask about. 
Can't remember where I read this, but I thought VHF's were supposed to be 
wired without a panel switch so that they were always available in case of 
emergency. Anyone?

The only thing about moving your panel is that it is really nice to be able 
to reach in from the cockpit and flip on the lights, depth sounder, etc. 
Have you considered mounting it on the bulkhead between the cockpit and the 
cabin?  I would think that would be a much more convenient spot and away 
from the vulnerable area you mentioned.  Mine is there too but aside from 
having to stand on my head to read off a switch label, I haven't had any 
problems with it.
