Hi Andrew, I have followed your posts with interest as apparently you now own the '86 I sailed for a year while waiting for my boat from Stan.  I haven't had anything to contribute to your observations re hunting as the boat never did it with me.(Possibly because I kept it on a lift!)
I am wondering if you have the same Merc I had because -at quite low speeds & just above idle- neutral was easy to find.  Perhaps something is out of adjustment???
If it is the same engine, rest assured it was quite reliable and I suspect it will "serve (you) well".
