[Rhodes22-list] Boatshow & Chesapeake Rhodie alert

Mary Lou,

Sorry I missed you at the show, but count me in for a mid-winter
get-together. Of course I would vote for Kent Island as a location, but
I'm certainly willing to drive.

Had a great time at the show on Thursday. All manufacturers, including
Stan, are good at marketing the positive features of their boats. After
wondering around and looking at all of the Rhodes' competitors, I was
surprised at how many useful features we have on our boats that others
do not. Some were prettier and some were cheaper (good qualities for a
one-night stand), but looks fade and cheap can cost you in the long run.

Elton: As always it was good to see you. Did you sell that Catalina
dealer a Rhodes?
Stan: Thanks so much for letting us take out your demo boat. Pleasant
surprise.
Bob & Art: Couldn't have had a better time. Sailing conditions were
near perfect and company was even better. GO ARMY, BEAT NAVY!
Jay: Thanks for the centerboard advice. I tested your pivot-point
theory on Sunday and it worked. Gave me better control and took the
pressure off the tiller while beating it with too much sail and heel.
I'm still convinced that the centerboard is almost useless except for
pointing ability. In light air yesterday on a close reach at 2.1 knots,
dropping the centerboard slowed me down. Does the centerboard improve
speed on any point-of-sail at any speed in any condition?

We ended up going to the Annapolis show on Sat. and had the great
pleasure of meeting Art and renewing our acquaintance with Jay. Good
to have an opportunity to talk to Stan and Elton.

Later on the other side of the show we ran into Don & Jeanne Clarke
and Jim Harrison from the Middle River area. We had a beer together
and then later over dinner started talking about a mid-winter
get-together. We did this several years ago at Schaeffers Canal House
(now closed) in Chesapeake City. This is an early heads up to the
Chesapeake/mid-Atlantic Rhodies. Former & future Rhodies will also be
welcome.

We don't have a date yet - thinking January or early February. Nor
do we have a place. We are open to suggestions. For us in Rock Hall
and the folks from the Middle River either north (Northeast, Elkton,
Chesapeake City, Havre de Grace) or south (Kent Island, Annapolis) is
midway in-between. Schaeffers was great because they had a one-price
Sunday brunch buffet and space for 16-20 Rhodies where we could watch
the ice float by on the C&D. If anyone is interested and has any
suggestions let us know.
