[Rhodes22-list] Anchor Lockers

In my experience proper anchor lockers do not work properly in
practice. All-chain rodes form pyramids of chain leading from the
windlass which then avalanche into piles with some of the chain closer
to the anchor invariably winding up under some of the chain further from
the anchor.

At this point one person has to crawl into the "proper" anchor locker
while the other operates the windlass from above. It's heavy work for
the person down below who must constantly pray that the person above
doesn't push the button at the wrong time at the price of a few fingers
or a hand.

Many people on larger boats have moved their anchor lockers to the
stern, under the seats or in the lazarette. That's where I keep mine,
although I also keep an anchor on the bow, and rode in the tray. It has
been handy to have access to anchor and rode from my dinghy when the
unanticipated has occurred.
