Leland, I own a Garmin GPS Map 76. It is overkill for sailing home waters
but when cruising up the East Coast it was great to have in addition to
charts. Garmin calls the feature "tracks". You can turn tracks on (Map Mode)
and see a dotted line of the course you just traveled.

I was paddling my kayak around Hilton Head a couple of years ago. I went
ahead and brought my GPS to use as knot meter. I was curious as to how
fast/far we could average over a couple of hours....I never really thought I
would need to use for navigation. Have you ever been to Hilton Head? They
have canals that wind around through golf courses and sub divisions for
miles. You are never really lost but when it came time to head back to my
car I quickly realized that every canal looked the same. I just used the
"tracks" and followed the dotted line back to parking lot.

Some else mentioned the Tide information available on most marine GPS. If
you are sailing coastal waters this is really nice. If you travel to other
ports you always have good tide info. I don't have a dedicated knot meter so
I use the GPS for speed information. I don't have tides to worry about but
we do have river currents. Remember the GPS tracks speed over ground but
this is still useful info. Most GPS have a feature that allows you to
calculate VMG or drift. Even at thelow end these devices are quite useful.

I have been happy with the quality of my GPS. There is a book
out...something like "GPS for Mariners" that really helped me figure out how
to use most of the features of my GPS. The book is not written for Garmin
specifically but if you have a Garmin Map 76 the key strokes used will be
just like your own GPS.

Fair Winds,

Wally
