Dave,
I wouldn't use a tarp either, even with little or no snow in this area.  I have used Sunbrella, which is sheer rugged, open back and front.  With Snow I'd probably increase the pitch on the sides (simple), and keep a good eye out, probably sweep the residue from any storms.
