[Rhodes22-list] lines - This is for Elle, again

Elle,

I like Art's idea. My old marina owner told me not to use the stern and bow
bolts, but he frequently didn't know what he was talking about. He did
mention:

1. Cost of the eye hook clips. Pretty minor, but you'd want stainless
steel or brass.
2. Noise of the eye hook clips. Pretty minor, but my Rhodes is the least
noisy boat in the marina in high winds, mostly because of no loose halyard
flapping against the mast.
3. You'd have to adjust your line from the piling instead of the cleat,
which many people do by choice anyway.

Even though we're in different parts of the Chesapeake, our tide
fluctuations may be similar. Normal fluctutation is 18' for me, but
seasonal tides with strong winds blowing the water out of our small bay can
create over a four foot difference in tide. Last week's 60+ mph wind was a
good example. By the way, I didn't need to adjust my lines at all last
week. I think my slip is 14' wide. I don't cross my stern lines. I have
spring lines running from my stern cleats to the bow pilings, but I suspect
they aren't necessary. During the storm at low tide with the lines tied-up
high and the wind blowing up under my flared hull, my boat was heeling
something fierce.

When I first got my boat I was adjusting my lines constantly. Most new
lines stretch quite a bit and it took awhile before I was comfortable that
my "new" boat wouldn't be destroyed against the dock. Marking the lines
with tape is an excellent idea.

Good luck!

Lee
