      I agree with the other comments you've received about raising the centerboard in heavier winds.  I've found that the issue, many times, is not whether its up or down but rather how much you raise it or lower it.  Because the centerboard swings, you can move the center of resistance toward the stern by raising the CB some of the way but not all the way up.   I'd recommend you experiment and see if that helps.

OK thanks. That makes sense as I think about it. Re: manual - I 
downloaded the manual text for the '88 model. I will assume that 
much of the advice in there will apply to my '79 model as 
well. There is some discussion in there about centerboard position 
in heavy and light airs. More research is required :-)
