Luis,

Even if rot is not part of your problem, yanking out the screws stripped 
the holes in the tabernacle, so it would not be possible to set the same 
screws in the same holes.  Most people go to larger screws, but there is 
another approach that is useful in many instances:

Dip some wooden toothpicks in any decent wood glue and then insert them 
into the stripped hole, clipping off the tops so the toothpicks are 
flush.  Allow the glue to dry.  Now drive the same screws, into the same 
holes.  They will set like new, and they will not loosen.
