[Rhodes22-list] Politics: Brad -- What Does He Mean?

I have to admit, I have mixed feelings about all of this.

When I was in high school, and watched the Nixon fiasco, I was basically
non-political. In a classroom assignment in grade school (in '68), I had
"picked Nixon" to win, but that was just because my friends had all
picked Humphry, and I didn't care about Democrats since the one Catholic
I supported had been killed. (Keep in mind, I was in the 6th grade) In
'72, being from a military family, I supported Nixon over McGovern. That
was the extent of my loyalty to Nixon.

I was bothered to see our country go through what we did, and grew
sadder as the situation worsened. At church summer camp, the camp
director (who was my surrogate father for many of my growing years),
cautioned the kids not to cheer when we watched what we knew was going
to be his televised resignation speech. I thought then why would anyone
cheer?

That's the way I feel now. I feel bothered by what we're going through,
and anticipated I'm going to be similarly saddened, but no way would I
cheer.

When Clinton went through his political troubles, I remember thinking
with a certain smugness "You know, when you pick up a snake, and you
know it's a snake, you can't complain when it bites you". We, as a
nation, picked Clinton, and we should have know what he was when we
picked him up (we were certainly told many times).

That's also the way I feel now. It's not cheering, but it is a certain
smugness that we, as a nation, should have known what we were getting,
and now we're about to starting mowin what we were sowin.

And I still feel sad.

And I still believe we are the most resilient people in the world. We
have a system that will enable us to come back from this stronger than
we were before. That system will work, no matter what road this little
trip takes.
