Compression post on the Rhodes 22 are usually not perfectly under the mast.
That location of compression post not under the mast is typical on many
other small sailboats. If not directly under mast it is usally within
inches.
On non powder room boats the wall (i.e. bulkhead) attaches to compression
post and spreads compression load. One time someone posted a interior
picture of an older R22 that had an arch continue from the compression post
to the port bulkhead. Most boats have a wooden bulkhead attached to the
bottom of the partion that acts as horizontal load distributor.
All R22's have a compression post to distribute load. If during a previous
owner rebuild it was removed then the boat and cabin can be misshappen from
the verticle and horizontal loads. Even with a properly positioned
compression post, the stays can be tightened too much and cause cracks in
the cabin roof.
On a R22 the sail plan design does not require overly tightened stays. The
loads will be on the windward side while the leeward is noticeably loose.
This is the way it is supposed to be.
Word on the street is that there is a John Shulick who sings like a canary
or maybe a hoot owl? Is that the John S. on this forum?
