I haven't done it yet, but I'm about to! On my boat, the topping
lift terminates on a cleat screwed to the mast about 4 feet up on the
port side. It's not at all convenient for adjustment because you
have to leave the cockpit and go forward, uncleat the line,
tension/release as needed, re-cleat, then return to the cockpit.
What I plan to do is something similar to how the main and jib
halyards are run along the starboard side - I'll attach a block at
the mast base and run the line to port out past the poptop to a pad
eye (or maybe a turning block, haven't decided yet). From there, the
line will lead straight back to a clam cleat fastened to the cabin
top near the aft edge.
The line will be within easy reach and can be uncleated,
tensioned/released, and re-cleated in seconds... probably with only one hand.
Cheers!
