Dan,
A 5000 pound receiver should be sufficient. A receiver is different from a
bumper mounted system. Make sure you get the receiver. It will allow you to
change out balls of different sizes and givers you a variety of things to attach
the ball to, allowing for height adjustment. Remember, you want the tongue
of the trailer to be horizontal as much as is possible.
I also have the Ram 1500, what engine and transmission do you have?

I am planning to have a trailer hitch installed on my Dodge RAM 1500 so I
can tow our new recycled Rhodes back from Edenton. No mountains - just from
Edenton up to Virginia, over to Solomons Island, MD.
Will a trailer hitch rated at 5000 pounds be sufficient or should I go to
10000?
I'm not planning to routinely trailer the boat; otherwise I would
automatically go up to the larger hitch. But I certainly don't want to do anything
unsafe either.
Dan
