[Rhodes22-list] RE Line Replacement on the GBI Furler

Thanks Slim:

Last year, I reconditioned the genoa at Sailcare, replaced the forestay and
the bearings because I had a broken wire strand. I had the furler apart to
do all that and I was looking but couldn't tell how the line was secured
inside the tube. I should have replaced the line then, but it looked fine,
but another year in the hot sun and now it is starting to fray.

I am going to be talking to Stan shortly about purchasing a new IMF main
because I think mine is beyond help. I'll try to pick his brain and see if
he remembers how it was designed because I don't think that they use this
particuliar furler in production boats anymore.

Regards,
David

David,

I don't remember exactly how the line was attached to my old GBI furler--I
now have the CDI Flex Furler. But as long as you're doing maintenance on
the furler, it would be a very good idea to see if Stan can get you new
"bearings" for the top and bottom. As they wear out, they tend to "grab"
the stay instead of letting it slip when winding in and out. Because of
this, my stay itself was being wound and unwound over and over until it was
kinked on its entire length but of course the stay is inside the tube so you
can't see if it's being kinked.
