[Rhodes22-list] Extension bar use

WHAT TODD SUGGESTS WORKED FOR US FOR YEARS, AS THE WATER LEVEL AT OUR LAKE LAUNCHING RAMP VARIED AS THE SEASON PROGRESSED. INSTEAD OF A BOLT TO FIT THE DRILLED HOLES FORWARD OF THE REARMOST STOP BOLT, WE USED A THREADLESS PIN WITH A 90 DEGREE BEND AT THE END, LIKE A HANDLE, AND A SMALL HOLE I DRILLED AT THE INSERTING END WHICH WOULD TAKE A SPRING LOADED COTTER PIN TYPE CLIP. THIS MADE IT MUCH EASIER TO CHANGE FORWARD HOLES' SETTINGS AS WE HAD TO EXTEND OR RETRACT THE TRAILER EXTENSION.

Without looking at a trailer to see if there is room, wouldn't it be
easier to drill a cheater hole in the end of the extension bar? Extend
the bar and fit the pin in the hole. Then if any of the extension bar is
still protruding out of the back of the trailer housing, drill another
hole through the extension right at the aft edge of the outer tube
housing. This way a second pin (or bolt) inserted acts as a stop pin and
stop the extension at the correct position.

Paint a mark on the extension bar, when it is in the right
position, where it comes out or goes in the sleeve at the front of
the trailer.. You will see the mark coming when you are pulling the
bar and you can align the mark with the corresponding end.
It is easier than looking for the hole.
Also, I found out that it is easier to unhitch, pull the bar out,
and then re-hitch, than trying to pull the bar with the vehicle.

Andrew,
Buy a cheap hand winch. Attach one end to the trailer and the other
to the frame of the tow vehicle. Let the extension bar out beyond the
pin hole and wench the two together. Ideally, you want the cable
lengths situated so that the wench is very near the pin hole location
so you can watch the progress single-handed, a very easy
modification.
