[Rhodes22-list] Political - McCain, Me First

Ben,
To tag on to Rich's column, the one group the GOP has really alienated
is the youth/students. Working at a major university, it's interesting
to see. Yes, I suppose a university is one of those leftist, elitist
places that the GOP rails against, put I always thought that students
are the future. The number of students registering to vote for this
election is unbelievable. And from what I've heard and seen, it's 4-1
for the democrats. The GOP just doesn't have anything to offer them.
These students grew up with gay people and gay marriage is OK with them.
A women's right to choose? Of course they believe in a women's right to
choose, why not? They've lived with it their whole lives. It's a
personal choice to them, not a political stance. Universal health care?
Of course, why shouldn't everyone have health care. This is a group who
grew up where everyone wins and there are no losers. Why should some
people be denied their rights? It's ironic that the GOP has railed
against elitists, but students, who are for fairness and diversity and
the environment and equality have been left out of the GOP fold. Now,
the big question is whether the students will vote or not, it's not an
easy practice. You have to go somewhere and stand in line and these
aren't known to be patient people. If they ever make voting
on-line......

Last thought on the subject. Last week the Rock the Vote motor home
came through campus. Rock the Vote is a non partisan organization that
attempts to get students involved with the political process and
registered to vote. The campus democrats and republicans both had set
up tables to register students. The line at the democrat's table was
about 5 times as long as the one at the republican's table. And that
was observed several times that day. The local registrar (a republican)
has tried to block students from voting here until the state elections
board told him to cease and desist because he was violating state law.
I'm very curious to see what the election returns for this area will be.

 Rob;

Rather than start a new thread I thought I would give you a link to my
favorite NYTimes Columnist which explains the shift of Republicans like
me
to Sen. Obama. It's more than personalities, it's the entire GOP shift
out
of the center. I also thought Frank Rich's column this past Sunday was
just
exactly right. Check it out.

best,

Ben C.
