[Rhodes22-list] Rhodes22-list Digest, Vol 2058, Issue 1

Thanks for the note Richard. I am glad to find a former Schucker
Owner on the Rhodes list. I always felt that the Schucker was a special
find--and so did the guy who worked on her. Out of the blue he made me an
offer once he decided to retire. I like the improvement process that Stan
has used over the years and am looking forward to the new Rhodes.

Frank, you and I have similar experiences since I now own a Rhodes 22
and I owned a Schucker motorsailer for 20 years. The stock boat came
with a 35' mast and I substituted a 50' mast in its place. I also had an
enormous genoa. This made it into a good sailer and it would point to 45
degrees (it had a centerboard but seemed to sail close to the wind with
it up or down, much like a Rhodes 22). For example I sailed it up the
Detroit river against the current and single handed it on a single
handed Mackinac race up Lake Huron (took a second place in class). My
boat was named Amazing Grace and that was because it would sail so well
even though it was 14' feet wide, weighed 30,000 pounds and only had a
3' draft with board up. I always believed Jim Schucker stretched the
lines of a Cal 25 and changed the keel shape to a long shallow rather
than a fin keel. On one club race I started 15 minutes late and beat a
43' William Garden designed Taiwan Ketch to the windward mark. Of course
it wouldn't compete with the light displacement racers. I sold it and I
understand it is in the Toledo area now. Good luck with your new Rhodes.
It is a thoroughbred sailer and is much easier to reef than your
Schucker.

Stan,
Sometimes old? How does that work? Sounds like a worthy objective for
us
who have become always old.
You're not evolutionary, you're revolutionary!

Derek,
I agree w Rummy on all but the mast commentary. After several years of
manual raising, which can be done by 2 stout men, I had trouble
finding a mast raising crew when my son left for college 2 years ago.
While 2 can physically raise the mast, there is a moment of
uncertainty as you step up onto the cabin top from the foredeck when
you have minimal control from side to side movement and possible
disaster if it starts to go over sideways.
2 years ago I bought the mast system from Stan and I can now raise the
mast safely by myself. I think it is a mandatory purchase for anyone
who intends to trailer their Rhodes or store it annually with the mast
down.
Good sailing,

Frank,
Sounds good--just give me a day's notice. I consider "reasonably warm"
above 50 degrees, and with global warming and El Nino I'm sure we'll
have a
few of those days.
I normally don't go out unless it's above 40 degrees but with today's
sunshine and forecast for 9 mph winds I may need to make an exception.
I
was out Friday when it was in the upper 40s but the wind was very
disappointing. The best part about sailing this time of year is that
you
don't need to keep your beer on ice.

I agree with Stephen on mast raising but I think it is important to
make it clear if we are talking about the IMF rig or not. The in-mast
furling system makes the mast considerably heavier than a
conventional mast. You are raising the weight of the main, the boom
and perhaps the jib in addition to the weight of the mast. If Derek's
boat is conventionally rigged (I think Greg PA's is a conventional
rig) doing it manually becomes much more feasible.
There are numerous designs for mast raising equipment on the Internet
but if Derek's boat already has the block on the cabin for the
General Boats crane he might want investigate the cost of a system
from Stan. It's a proven system.

Derek,
There are a couple of videos on the web showing the GB system in use.
http://www.sailingtexas.com/Movies/Rhodes22c/srhodes22c.html
There are pics as well as an explanation of the setup and operation on
the Rhodes22 owners site (with permission of General Boats) and many
pics and discussion in the list archives.
http://www.rhodes22.org/rhodes/pics/GBMAST.jpg
http://www.rhodes22.org/doclib/Rhodes22-1988-MastHoist-Raven.pdf
GB has made several changes to their system over the years, mostly
improving how the mast is kept from leaning sideways and how the "crane
pole attaches to the mast. If you arehandy with tools, you can easily
make your own mast raising systemequal to or better than the General
Boats setup for under $200 in parts, supplies, and hardware. Having
never seen the GB system in use or in person, nor having read the
manual, I made my own. In about 3 hours, I made a system (using the
trailer winch) and had the mast down by myself with no trouble.
Do you homework so you get an understanding of how the GB mast hoist
system works first. I can help you with pics, explanations, material
lists etc. when you are ready to start building you own.

Derek,
I agree w Rummy on all but the mast commentary.

Thanks Greg,
I also have wondered if there was a way to buy some cheaper items. I
have
bought my boat and am told by buyer it is ready to sail. However there
are
some things I would like to do to it before I make first launch. I am
pretty
sure there are some things I need to get like rope. I priced some things
in
a sail shop and it seems they are way over priced.
Thanks for the advice
Derek

Derek
Congratulations! I was in your same position last February. The people
on
this forum helped me a lot and I got an abandoned 1979 sailing by the
summer
working on her mostly just Saturdays. I have had to re-do all my rigging
and
learned a few hard lessons I would be happy to pass on.
I have the manual, but I believe it is in the FAQ section of the GBI
website.
I have raised my mast several times with just one other person very
easily,
I do not have the winch. We also took it down last month in 18 mph winds
with little difficulty. There are a couple tricks, like tape the stays
to
the mast so they don't kink.
Another trick I learned from doing all this on a budget is I buy my
running
rigging at REI and EMS. Their climbing rope is as good as any marine I
have
seen and is 1/3 the cost. Nicer colors too.
Good Luck, send me an email and I will forward my cell if you want to
talk.

Derek,
There are no ropes on a boat. There is running rigging and standing
rigging. Running rigging consists of the lines, such as halyards and
sheets, that are used to control the sails. The standing rigging on a
rhodes 22 consists of stainless steel stranded wire to support the mast
such
as the forestay, side upper and lower stays and the aft stays. Gotta
keep
up with the terminology. :-)

Thanks Hank,
I am very new to sailing and this is my first real sail boat. I am
learning
some of the terminology. However what do you call the rope you tie to
the
anchor chain, and the rope you tie to the dock?

FYI -
Open Office is free, runs on Windows, LINUX, Mac, etc.
It has all the important functions of MS Office.
It also puts out PDF files from spread sheets, documents, etc.

In case Rummy or anyone else is interested:? Microsoft has a free add-in
for
Office 2007 that will allow you to publish word docs, spreadsheets, and
access reports to PDF.? I don't know why they make you hunt for it
online
and install it separately.? I didn't bookmark the page where you get it;
hopefully it's not hard to find.
That's probably too big a PITA to worry with just for an occasional post
to
this list, but if you ever send docs to clients or vendors and have
version
problems, then this can be quite helpful.

Yeah I'm guessing Word docs are getting stripped.? Can you save it as?
a PDF?? More useful that way anyway.? If you can't convert it, send it?
to me and I'll do it for you.
Cheers!

Greg,
"I priced some things in
a sail shop and it seems they are way over priced." Welcome to boating!
Cleaning, cruising, safety, and fishing supplies you can pick up at your
local K-Mart. I bought some cheap dock lines there that aren't very
pretty but work just fine.
West Marine prices are high but they usually carry most of the sailing
supplies you'll need. Browse the store and write down everything you
need and then go online and find the best prices. West Marine will
match the online prices of their competitors.
Good luck!

Good Luck, send me an email and I will forward my cell if you want to
talk.
