Ron,
I believe that I remember Rummy saying that sailing alongside another R22  
without the battened main, he was able to slowly pull away from his competition. 
 Adding 6 square feet of sail area isn't a lot of additional sail, but 
anything  helps.

more mainsail area, and made it much easier to balance the  boat with the
175 genoa.  I could feel the difference right  away.  The batten is near the

of the sail, so it stays outside  of the mast when the sail is furled.  It is

night and day - but  it is worth having if you need to replace the main or
are buying a new or  recycled boat.
