Hank,
I think the consensus is: "it depends"
I've used a 4 hp 2 stroke Mariner, an 8 hp 2 stroke Mariner and a 101 lb (~
5 hp) thrust MinnKota 36V saltwater electric.
I prefer the electric because it is quiet with no fumes and it gives one
better control of the boat. With no appreciable wind or current, I can get >
2 hrs. at ~ 5 knots with 2 people on board. The batteries have never
dropped below a full charge indication. I use three, 12 V, 75 amp hr, marine
batteries. Unfortunately the lead acid batteries weigh 35 lb each. The
newer LiPoFe4 batteries weigh considerably less, but cost more. I recently
paid ~ $400 for a 40 amp hr 12 V battery for another electic boat motor (40
lb thrust).
If you want to go on long cruises, have large currents (> 3-4 knots), or
high winds and have tow insurance get a gasoline motor, if you just want to
sail & need a motor to get to the sailing area, consider an electric.
cheers,
Joe
