There is nothing meaningless about the US Yacht Ensign. It, along with the USPS ensign are completely apprppopriate for US boat.
The US flag from the spreader is known as a courtesy flag. Any boat in foreign waters flys the flag of the local country from the stbd spreader

Greg,
You don't even need micro blocks. Just cut a piece of the plastic tubing
used to protect your sails from chafing on the stays to the vertical length
of your flag, then tie the flag to the port back stay with plastic cable
ties at each end of the tubing. Use another piece of tubing to slide and
support the flag-tubing assembly up the stay a few feet.
I presume you will be flying a standard US flag to show both boat and crew
are American. If you fly a yacht ensign, it is meaningless.
BTW, flying the US flag from the starboard spreader indicates the boat, crew
or both are not American; but you have registered with Homeland Security.
If you are not registered, it gives the Coast Guard good reason to board.
Those of us who sail near what was once the longest fortified border in the
world learn that lesson pretty quick.
