Hey, guys,
Put this weekend on your calendar for next year...not for the boat show but
for the Turkey Shoot Regatta on the Rappahannock.

It's the largest Regatta on the Bay, all volunteer & all for hospice...and
lotsa boats (this year we had @ 125...last year @ 140)! R-22 will fit right
in...Boat or design has to be at least 25 years old...so everyone is
eligible!...and if there are five or more we'd have our own class..and
probably a trophy as well!
And a perk...I work the event so can give you an inside track for slips,
etc...(shhh) .and it is at the marina where I work...;^) ?

Our Rhodes don't really need much stuff, so pass on the boat show & come on
down to the Northern Neck for a beautiful weekend of fun & food & gorgeous

Thanks to you both for your replies.
Art: I'll take you up on the offer and call, probably after Monday. Chris
Cowie offered to take me for a sail, but he won't be there tomorrow, so I'll
go down again Monday.
The possibility of putting the IMF on the 26RK got me excited, because
for me that's one of biggest R22 selling points. But I wonder: The R22 mast
is 26', while the 26RK is 33'. I'll ask both Stan and Tim deVries at Hake
about this.
Mary: I've been asking myself all the questions you ask, without coming up
with clear answers. Many bear on Art's message, too. Forgive me for replying
at such length: your questions have given me a really good reason for
thinking in writing.

I will do a lot of daysailing, but I also look forward to (or hope to do) a
fair amount of weekending &/or cruising. I'll keep the boat at the dock at
my house in Apollo Beach FL. That's on the East side of Tampa Bay, across
from St Petersburg and (by car) 30 minutes North of the Manatee River & the
Gulf. The house & dock are near the Bay on a very broad canal--indeed, it
looks more like a river.
I'm single & right now don't have friends who sail (having a boat will
change the latter, I hope) so I expect to be single-handing much or most of
the time.
My closest friends in the area, a couple w/ an 1-year-old daughter,
don't sail now but are eager to go out with me.

I'm adding a boatlift and a float (for a kayak &/or small daysailer) to my
dock, so the boat will spend most its time out of the water. In Florida that
reduce maintenance significantly.
I really wish I knew how much trailering I'll do. I guess that depends on
how good I am at towing a boat & launching & rigging it myself. I would LIKE
to be able to take a boat to the Keys or the Panhandle or the East coast
intercoastal, possibly even up here to the Chesapeake. All such adventures
are more likely if I have friends who are up for them.

Many (many many) years ago I used to go for 2-week cruises on a friend's
powerboat (a 1928 Dawn cruiser) and I've been on a few large sailboats for
3-4 nights out. I like the idea of "living aboard" in a comparable way. Just
as the IMF is a big selling point for the R22, the standing headroom and
cabin amenities of the 26RK are appealing. (Options include hot water
showers & air-conditioning, but of course with my Spartan upbringing I have
no use for that nonsense.)

Yes, I worry about all of this. I'm retired, so time for maintenance is not
the biggest issue. I assume having a lift & float will both reduce
maintenance & make it easier. The ongoing costs are a concern--for example,
insurance is quite a lot more in coastal Fl. The R22 is the safer bet in all
these regards.
This is probably the place to say that the community of R22 owners & this
list are strong recommendations. I don't find anything comparable for
Seawards, and I suspect Hake Yachts itself if fairly corporate & impersonal.
Also important to me: the way Stan & Elton have been fine-tuning their boats
for so many decades.

I'm pretty sure the mast on the 26RK is easier to raise, since you're not
simultaneously lifting head sail & main sail (& boom?). On the other hand,
once the mast is up on the R22, you're essentially ready to go, right? With
the 26RK you still have to get the sails on, etc.

process. I hope this hasn't been unforgivably boring to read. Regardless,

fixing them). I wouldn't imagine that the 5 inches difference in
draft makes much difference launching and retrieving a boat. With the
General mast raising system setting up a Rhodes 22 is easy but
time-consuming. I think the folks that trailer a lot have it down to
about 40 minutes. It takes us longer because we only set it up or
take it down once a year and there is a lot of checking to make sure
that we have it right. I don't know about the Seawards as far as set up.

There's a 5 year old Hunter 27 with a shoal keel for sale at the club next
door to ours. My wife and I are always on the lookout for a more roomy head
than our R22, so the other day we went over to see the Hunter.
The Hunter doesn't trailer easily, but at this stage for us, trailering is
becoming a secondary consideration. It has a decent IMF system, although it
takes grinding a winch 10 times longer than the R22 IMF to get the mainsail
out or in.
The cockpit is half the R22, compromised by a massive wheel and the
main-sheet traveler embedded across the cockpit sole just before the wheel
pedestal. The tiny bimini only covers the helm station. Yuck.
The cabin is huge with a double settee and a galley that would do justice to
a 35 footer. A single bunk is tucked under the cockpit, but we don't sleep
in the boat much anymore. There's lots of clever convenience design to ease
maintenance, including all chainplates exposed.
The head has 6' standing room with sink and shower. A couple grab bars
could be added to make it ideal, making up for the cockpit drawback.
But then there is the companionway. Four steps, narrow and no grab rails.
A monkey couldn't get in and out of the cabin in modest seas.
We're stikin' with the R22. The head may be a tight fit, but we don't have
to fall down any steps to get to it.
