[Rhodes22-list] hull & cockpit color question

I have a dark blue hull and have never felt that it made the cabin hot at all, and I've had the boat in some pretty warm areas (South Florida, etc.).  It's my feeling that water temperature probably has more of a bearing on hull and cabin temperature than the hull color (though air temp will trump everything).  Besides, most of the Rhodes hulls are covered with carpet in the cabin area which adds an additional layer of insulation.

Regarding, fading.  My original gelcoat did fade, but after Stan repainted with an awlgrip type epoxy it has looked shiny ever since.  It's also a lot harder/tougher finish than gelcoat.

I'm about to order mine and need to decide hull color. Geoff's boat has me reconsidering, but unlike Mary Lou, I lean toward something other than white.

Lots of folks say (claim?) a dark color makes the cabin hot, even if the deck & cockpit are white. Is that true? Does anyone regret buying a colored hull for this--or any--reason? 

Mary Lou: since you have a white hull but a blue cockpit (navy? royal?), do you find the cockpit gets hot to sit in? 

This is especially important as I'll keep the R22 in Florida. 

Also, does anyone have experience with one of the deck surfaces that look like wood (or try to look like wood)? I saw something called New Teak in Annapolis, but there are other brands, too.

Geoff,
Great looking boat.

I really like the look of a white Rhodes. Fretless before recycling 
was a blue boat. The gelcoat had faded badly. Stan described the 
color as "an experiment that didn't work well". When he told us he 
had this boat available, he said he was going to paint her and asked 
what color we would like. We said we had been thinking about a white 
boat but we weren't too sure about putting white paint over blue 
gelcoat. Stan said he didn't think it would be a problem and 12 years 
later the boat still looks great. The bonus is that we got a blue 
gelcoat cockpit (easy on the eyes in bright sun and doesn't show as 
much dirt) as we decided that painting surfaces we walked on wouldn't 
be such a good idea.
