Charles,
This sounds like a Corpus Christi sailor. Are his winds from 130 degrees? Someone on the list should be able to reach Jim White, whose son is now sailing his R22 in the South Padre Island vicinity. Jim opted to trade into a much larger boat, a choice my FIL also made many years ago. Lee might want to comment also, re high winds in the Chesapeake Bay area.
My experience in CC type environs would suggest caution, as consistent 20knots means occasionally much higher blows. Ergo, a much shortened main and genny most of the time. IMF would make this easier to cope with, but marginal. You are thoughtful to put the question out.
How about this - have you considered sharing your 2nd R22 ownership with another skipper? I did this years ago on a new pontoon, with a well trusted friend. We still share the boat and our friendship! The risks are greater with our boat, but split costs may make a new partial skipper more confident.
I tried to email a few days ago and it bounced, so I hope this arrives. Best to you!
Art
And, have a nice day!

My question for the group (especially the part of you that sail in 20 kt winds regular, personally, I am not that brave) is "How well does a Rhodes hold up to these strresses? and Do you believe that Stan's construction standards offer an advantage for this kind of sailing?"
