[Rhodes22-list] John Lock Triad Trials

Joe,
With the single axle trailer, I generally line up the second port window
over the wheel. If you are too far forward, you will not be able to lift
the trailer coupler off the hitch ball without a lot of effort. Cranking the
trailer jack to lift a very heavy trailer usually breaks the plastic wheel.
If the boat is too far aft, the tongue weight could be negative (ouch, that
smarts when it hits you as you open the coupler - leave the safety chains
attached just in case, to limit the travel of the trailer from the hitch).
Until you have the correct tongue weight, DO NOT LEAVE THE WATER. You may
need to reposition the boat forward or backward. This is best done with the
boat floating (or nearly floating) and the bunks wet.
Use care when cranking the forward cable. If the boat isn't sliding on the
bunks, they are either too dry or the you need to back the trailer in deeper
so that the boat floats. If the cable snaps due to overload, it will do
harm!
I once had my boat perfectly positioned on the trailer. I then loaded a ton
of junk into the cockpit and added my outboard so that I would be ready to
go when she splashed. When I tried to extend the tongue to launch, the
negative tongue weight prevented the tongue from telescoping! It's all
physics.

John:
I don't have too much crap on the boat that would produce significant
weight, aside from what's on the transom. If I simply snug the boat up
against the forward-most point on the trailer (since the trailer is built
for the boat) I assume I should be OK. Si?
Joe

Bob's statement might also be worded as "a lot of weight aft of the axle".
Meaning - if you're weight distribution 40% forward and 60% aft, you're
going to get fishtailing. If you can get close to 50/50 with
rudder/motor/etc on the transom then your balance is OK.
Cheers!
