[Rhodes22-list] Yet another cockpit drain question

The real question is "Is this the original fitting on the 1977?" If it
appears to be original or well worn, I would replace it. I replaced the
fitting, hose and clamps on my 1981 when it was about 28 years old. The
flange was so weak that it broke during disassembly. I used the same style
plastic fitting since it had lasted more than 25 years. I replace the
clamps with stainless clamps and a few bucks worth of thick hose from Home
Depot. The most important part is the rebidding at the hull. The original
had no sealant and the rubber washer had long ago disappeared. Tightening
plastic to clamp fiberglass is not a good solution. I rebidded with 3M 5200
since this is below the waterline when there are people in the cockpit. It
should last a lifetime (mine or the boat's, I'm not sure). If you think
that you may be rebidding in the future, use 3M 4200 for ease in removal.

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Yet another cockpit drain question

On the new to me 77 Rhodes I just bought (sitting on its trailer at a farm)
it was missing the drain hose and so lazarette was full of rain water. I
have replaced the hose and caulked the upper fitting/drain. Since no water
was leaking out around the edges of the lower fitting under the boat I am
thinking it should be fine. Does that sound like a safe bet or should I
replace it anyway? If I did replace it should I use a similar plastic one or
a regular bronze thru hull? Since I have never seen one of these boats in
the water I guess my real question is can a failing bottom drain fitting
sink the boat - ie should I think of as a regular thru hull? Don't want to
go down on my grand launching in the spring :) -- Steve
