Steve
I have an '81 Rhodes and have done extensive rebuilding of my centerboard,
trunk and
mechanism. The only way I've been able to test the watertight seal on the
cap is by hooking up a vacuum as a blower & taping a 5mil garbage bag around
the board to seal the cavity. I don't know if this is possible on your
trailer as I ve only done this on stands. Then when your sure no large
amounts of air are being lost, you dab soapy water around the seam on the CB
gasket or where the CAP meets the TRUNK. I did this in 2011 after adding a
1/4" of Garolite around my cap and trunk flange. The method worked fine for
me.
I used 2 1/2" SS cap bolts and nylock nuts. Due to the vibrations of moving
the board up and down you want to definitely use the nylocks and tighten
them in a zig zag pattern similar to tying up a boot or fastening down a
head gasket in a car.
hope this helps
feel free to contact me off list if you want
