Ron,
I'm glad all you have are some sore ribs. It could have been much worse. I
bet you will be more careful next time. You can probably straighten out the
mast step, but I would get a new one from Stan. Metal does strange things
when bent. It weakens and becomes brittle.

A very unfortunate mishap occurred yesterday while I was putting Ozone away
for the winter. My wife and I were lowering the mast. I am having a
difficult time with my memory. Even though I have raised and lowered the
mast using Stan's instructions several times before, yesterday I got all
mixed up and couldn't remember. I had the crane attached to it's fixture
on
the deck and attached to the appropriate shrouds. My wife asked me if she
should detach the shrouds on her side. I don't know why I said yes. I
feel
so stupid. It was like my brain stopped working. You know what happened
next. The mast went down. The crane with fixture attached pooped out of
the deck and hit me in the back and side I might have a cracked rib.
Fortunately I didn't feel it (at the time) and it didn't knock me off the
boat and down to the concrete/blacktop below. The mast step popped out
too.
The mast fell on a chain link fence which stopped it from hitting the
concrete.
Anyhow. The damage to Ozone was minor. Good clean holes no damage to the
structure (bless you Stan), dry wood underneath. Maststep is bent I don't
know if I should try to pound it back into shape or get a new one (where
can
I get one)? Mast has two dings (mast still straight) where it hit the
fence. I don't think it is bent in enough to interfere with the operation
of the IMF or rub the sail too much.
What do you think I should do?
Do you believe in Guardian Angels? I do now! I could have been killed if
the crane hit me in the head and i took a plunge off the deck onto the
concrete. All I have is a very sore rib.
I also don't understand why I couldn't remember what to do when lowering
the
mast. I don't understand how I was so confused with the process. It came
back to me after the accident. I feel so stupid.
Ron
