[Rhodes22-list] companionway trim strips

I've been considering the same work as you Graham. I think the synthetic
decking material will be less maintenance in the long run, I was also
thinking that It would simple be a decorative cover for the track that I put
in. I was going to use some of that aluminum C track that you can buy at
the big box home improvement stores as the slot that my hatch slid in and
out of.
I've got a ways to go before I get there because I'm still working on the
forward deck, weather has not been the greatest for working outside these
last few days.
Any thoughts on the aluminum track? Is it going to be more trouble than
it's worth? Or am I going to run into maintenance issues with the aluminum?
James

Jerry:
The original teak runners on my boat were 40" long x 1.25" wide and .5"
thick.
I just replaced mine but made them from composite decking cut so that the
grain pattern is up. I wanted to make the boat as maintenance free as
possible. I made the new stringers sturdier than the original teak as
composite material is not as strong at teak. I am not sure how that will
hold up - especially with screws driven from below. I might replace the
screws with bolts. On my boat the hatch slid on strips of Formica that were
broken and needed replacement so I used 1/8 x 1.5 inch aluminium strips. I
have attached pictures of the new rails on my freshly painted top. The
colours in the photo are off - the top is an off white and the rail is a
weathered grey colour. My plan is to use the composite material for the
cockpit trim as well unless it turns out to be problematic. I was not able
to find much on the web that discusses using this material in boats.

Could some one measure the strips of starboard that retain the companion way
slider on each side. I slipped on the ice and broke my leg three weeks ago,
and after the installation of a rod, a plate, and ten screws, I still have 3
more weeks until I can put weight on it. If I can get a Idea of how much
starboard to order, I can get a start on that project, while I'm dead in the
water.
Thanks,
Jerry Lowe
