I think you are quite correct about the weakest spot in the rig being where
the chainplate bends under the deck - where you can't see it. Examining the
ones I removed showed deterioration in that spot alone.

Mike, Thanks for the info on chainplate repair. The photo links did not open
but that is what I am doing.
The chainplates themselves are not that robust. Mine just tore at the entry
point in the top deck. I think that will be the weakest link as well as a
safety to not tear up the top of the cabin.
