[Rhodes22-list] installing new floor

Last summer I removed all of the stringers and end pieces for the floor
structure as I needed better access to the area over the keel. The frames
had been replaced by a previous owner who used pressure treated fence
boards. After more than 15 years the boards were still perfectly sound. At
one point I decided to add glass to bond the boards to the hull better and
was not sure if the epoxy would bond with the boards given the treatment.
The epoxy held firm - as I discovered when I removed them this summer.
The problem with using fence boards is that they are only 1/2 inch thick and
that gives a very small edge area to drive the screws for the floorboards,
When I redo it I will either use pressure treated deck boards that are 5/4
inch thick or white oak if I can get some at a reasonable cost. I think
using 2" material is a bit overkill but I have no idea what was/is being
used by General Boats. But based on my experience, it appears that the
pressure treated pine works fine. The stuff they make today is much less
toxic than what they were using before, it is all under the floor boards and
in my case will be coated in epoxy so I don't think the toxic properties are
something to worry about.
I will be interested to learn about how others are approaching the
installation of the framing. So please post what you do and how it worked
out.
Graham
