Matt,
The attached .jpeg file is a picture of S/V Dynamic Equilibrium on a light air close reach with a triradial spinnaker. You can see the spinnaker furling sock all bunched up near the masthead. Note how the T-Track and topping lift have enabled me to adjust the inboard end and outboard ends of the spinnaker pole until it is level, thus giving the maximum possible projection. The topping lift control line is led back to the cockpit. On this light air day, I haven’t bothered to rig the spinnaker pole vang because there isn’t enough wind to cause the spinnaker pole to rise up. You can tell it’s a very light air day because the water looks glassy. Despite the light air, supporting the outboard end of the spinnaker pole has enabled the spinnaker to inflate and provide useful thrust. You can see how the weight of the spinnaker sheets are dragging the clew down. It’s not enough to cause the spinnaker to collapse; but, some lighter sheets would have been useful that day.
I don’t have a similar photo of my cruising spinnaker or the genoa; but, they work the same way.

Matt,
The attached .jpeg file is a picture of S/V Dynamic Equilibrium with the previously discussed foredeck sail handling gear labeled.

Matt,
In order to be “legal” under PHRF racing rules, a spinnaker pole can only be as long as the so called J dimension. The J dimension is the distance from the front of the mast to the forestay. In the case of the Rhodes 22, J = 106” or 8.83’. With downwind sailing, speed is all about projected sail area. The longer the pole, the further outboard the clew of any foresail can be held and hence the larger the projected area. More projection gets a greater % of the foresail out from behind the wind shadow of the mast and mainsail, into clear air for more thrust. This is why the racing rules limit pole length to something realistic. Most PHRF race committees would consider your whisker pole a spinnaker pole and it would be considered “legal”, if not ideal. A 7’ long whisker pole is not the ideal length for a Rhodes 22. But, a free “short” whisker pole is better than no whisker pole 😉

Thanks Roger. Makes sense. I have been given a 7’ spinnaker pole and was
wondering if that was about right. :)
