[Rhodes22-list] Mounting an in-hull transducer

Hi Peter,

I mounted my thru hull paddlewheel knotmeter transducer in that location, just aft of the water tank on the port side. The hull is not cored. However, it is also shaped like a deep V. This means the sonar transducer will be mostly looking off to the side, thus making it a poor location for this kind of transducer. On port tack, the transducer will have no view of the bottom and you will probably lose your depth measurement.

I mounted my depth transducer on the starboard side back by the icebox, about halfway between the galley counter and the companionway step. The hull is much more flat in this area, not cored, and the depth sounder works well. I had to install a 3" screw-in deck inspection plate in the cabin sole to have access to the transducer without pulling up the floor boards. Another place to mount a depth sounder transducer would be in the lazarette compartment, as far forward as possible and as close to the centerline as possible. The hull is not cored here either and very flat.

I've never had any issues with leakage at either of these thru hulls. The knotmeter transducer is ahead of and inboard of the trailer bunks and the depth sounder transducer is inboard of the trailer bunks. Maybe it's possible to screw up a launch or recovery bad enough to hit one of the transducers on the trailer; but, I never have. The self-centering funneling guides and the keel guides make the trailer pretty idiot proof. The shoal draft keel would have to be outside of the keel guides in order for one the transducers to hit the bunks. If you're that bad at launch/recovery; then, you should go take some lessons.

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Mounting an in-hull transducer

Hi All,
I recently acquired a chart plotter/fish-finder and while I'm not much of a fisherman, I'd like to mount the transducer so I can use the depth sounder. I'd prefer not to drill any holes in the boat, especially below the waterline (if possible). I'm hoping to mount it in the hull below the "v" berth near the water tank. Does anyone know if the hull is cored in this location. In hull transducers require a solid core to work.

Thanks,
     Peter
